Once many online business people get their feet wet by running a successful online storefront on sites like eBay, they begin to look at other possibilities that exist in cyberspace for increasing their business. One popular alternative is CraigsList, an online community that uses free want-ad style posts to do everything from Rant and Rave and to sell everything under the sun. While CraigsList has done an amazing job by essentially making newspaper want ads obsolete overnight, it isn’t as safe or as profitable a marketplace as eBay is. Let’s take a look at a few benefits and drawbacks you can expect to experience if you decide to sell products via CraigsList.

First off, you have to understand how CraigsList works. There isn’t one central CL page that works for the entire country, or the entire world. CL is a community based website that has different pages for different major cities from all over the world. Some of these pages, like the ones for New York City, San Francisco and Vancouver are huge and get lots of traffic, but ones for smaller cities like Portland, Maine are almost barren. If you are going to place ads for your business, don’t bother using these smaller, seldom used CraigsList pages. Concentrate your energy on the big sites that get millions of views each day.

One major negative about using CraigsList is the fact that there is no safety net in place to protect business owners. On eBay, if a buyer doesn’t pay or tries to back out of a sale, there are safeguards in place that protect both people, and eBay will even pay you if you have been ripped off. Since there is so safety net in place like there is on eBay, users are encouraged to buy and sell items within their own city. Items are often hand delivered so there are no worries about shipping or packaging costs. If you live in a major city like New York, this style of business can make a lot of sense, but if you live in a rural area or in a city that doesn’t use CraigsList very much, it simply would be impossible to do business here.
