Treating Your Water With Pool Chemicals

If you are having a pool installed then you are very soon going to have to come to terms with the fact that you will be dealing with pool chemicals. Don’t worry though, because using pool chemicals to keep your pool water pure and safe to swim in is now so much easier then it has ever been before.

In fact you can even get an automatic pool chemical dispenser that does most of the work for you. Even though using pool chemicals is so much easier to do now there are a few basic things that you will need to work with them. The first thing that you will want to have is a safe place to keep them such as behind a locked door in a pool house or locked in a cabinet in your garage.

The reason for this is that kids can be attracted to any type of chemicals and although pool chemicals aren’t as poisonous as other chemicals that can be found in a home, they can cause severe skin irritation and even chemical burns on the skin.

Pool water testing is now so much easier then it has ever been before also, because its as easy as dipping a test strip into the water to test now. Pool chemicals come in a number of different variations and all the information that you will need to determine just what you will want can be easily found online.

Also there are varying factors that will determine how often you need to test for and add pool chemicals, such as amount of pool use and the season of year. For instance you will be needing to test for and add more pool chemicals in the mid summer when your pool is being used every day then you will in the middle of the winter when the weather is cold and the pool is empty.

Metal Fabrication Techniques

Metal Fabrication Techniques

Metal fabrication refers to the process of constructing metal by changing the standard raw metal materials with the use of specialized tools and equipment. Metal fabrication techniques, depending on the temperature at which the metal is processed, can be either be cold, hot or warm.

Examples of metal-fabricated products are everywhere. In fact, many of the common objects that we see and use in the house or office such as paper clips, nails and bolts are made using metal fabrication processes. Machines, automobiles, computers, heavy equipment, structural frames, hand railing and stairs of buildings are also constructed through metal fabrication.

Metal fabrication techniques are different from other metal methods such as, for instance, casting where you need to use some kind of mold to create the structure. In the case of fabrication, you utilize hand tools or machinery and a little elbow grease to come up with the desired output.

There are various techniques in fabricating metal components. One of them is metal forming. It is said to the oldest form of metal fabrication. Ancient civilization used the art of metal forming to create armaments. By just utilizing simple tools such as wooden mallet and metal hammer, Greek and Roman crarftsmen were able to produce helmets and cuirrasses. The category of metal forming consists of forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing, deep drawing, bending, spinning, and many others.

Another metal fabrication process is called machining or material removal, which involves the use of a cutting tool to remove unwanted metal materials from a workpiece to come up with the desired shape. This is an application that is designed to perfect metal surfaces, ranging from abrasive techniques to precise spot removal methods for parts as small as jewelry.

Common metal removal processes include sawing, tapping, broaching, boring, turning, drilling, milling and grinding. All of them are a common part of most manufacturing processes.

With the advent of modern technology, advanced metal fabrication techniques have also been invented to make the job easier and reduce production time. Nowadays, laser cutting, electro discharge machining, wire electro discharge machining and waterjet cutting are becoming more and more popular among metal fabricators and hobbyists.

Passive Solar Design At Home

Passive Solar Design At Home

If you ever wanted to save electricity and improve the comfort of your home without using any high-tech gadgets, then passive solar design is the answer.

Passive solar design is a technique of using the sun to naturally heat and light up your home or office. This is achieved by using various building features and materials to improve heating and cooling efficiency. The best part about passive solar design is that it is relatively simple to implement, little maintenance is needed, and your home’s market value can increase considerably.

Your home’s passive solar potential is determined by where and how it is situated and by the types of windows and materials used. Although most buildings can be optimized to receive the ideal amount of sunshine, it is easier if they are on flat land or a sun-facing slope. If your home is surrounded by many trees, make sure they are deciduous so that they shade your home in summer, but their bare branches let sunlight through in winter. Also, try avoid nearby buildings that create too much shade.

When constructing a new home, make sure it is built so that the length of the house faces the sun, allowing the maximum amount of sunlight. Also note how the size, shape and placement of windows will determine the amount of natural heat and light in your home.

So how does the sun heat your home? There are three ways:

Direct gain – direct heat from the sun shining on a surface.

Indirect gain – radiated heat from objects heated by the sun.

Isolated gain – determined by the airflow in your home.

To ensure the most natural heat from the above three sources, a number of large windows should be placed on the sun-facing side of your home, allowing maximum sunlight in.

All that sunlight and heat in your home is useless, if it cannot be stored and used when the sun is set. The solution is to use heat-absorbent flooring and walls that carry on radiating heat long into the night. A simple way to reduce power cost in winter is to locate to rooms in your house that get the most sunshine at certain times of day.  Also, shady rooms should be cut-off (their doors closed) from the rest of the house to retain heat better.

During summer, the right length roof overhangs or eaves can be used to control the amount sunlight and heat in your home.   The eaves should be wide enough shade out the intense midday sun, but let the let low-angle sunlight through during dusk and dawn to light up and warm the home.  Again, the right trees and shrubs can be planted to regulate the house’s seasonal exposure to the sun.

For current buildings, the simplest passive solar design solution is to replace your windows with modern ones, that use various methods to store up 50% more heat. Although they are 10% to 15% more expensive, they pay for themselves in the long-term from all the power saved to heat your home.

Double-glazed or Low-emissivity (Low-E) windows let solar heat in, but keep in the indoor radiant heat. Another way to reduce heat loss is to ensure tight seals around all windows or by using multiple panes that have gaps between them filled with argon or krypton gas.

What your windows are made from can make a big difference too. While metal framed windows generally conduct heat out the house, wood, vinyl and fiberglass frames insulate the heat better.  Always ensure any modern windows bought have labels issued by Energy Star or the National Fenestration Rating Council.  These labels provide statistics on how effective and efficient the windows are at retaining heat, which helps you purchase the right windows for your conditions and budget.

So you can see, passive solar design is the effective use of nature and physics to maximize the use of the sun’s natural lighting and heat.  Always remember, the point of solar passive design is to reduce your electricity usage and bills. So it is recommended to always weigh up the costs against the potential power savings when installing any passive solar solution at home.

Imaginative indoor activities for Children

Imaginative indoor activities for Children

Playing outside isn’t always an option. Whatever the weather – too cold, too much snow, rain, too hot, too muddy or too icy – sometimes we are stuck inside with young children who wish they were outside. However, you can certainly have a ton of fun by using some simple creativity and imagination. Here are several super fun ideas for indoor play that your child will delight in.

Make a cardboard puppet theater. A puppet theater can be made from any semi-large to large box. Simply find your box, cut off one of the wider sides and a large rectangular window in the other wide side. Then, with your child, be as creative or simple as you like decorating it. You can use paints, stickers, construction paper, ribbon, crayons, or markers. Basically, whatever you have on hand with work perfectly! After you’re done decorating it find a nice spot in your living room to have you and your child take turns putting on a puppet show. You can even practice one to put on for the other parent when they come home from work. You can gather a lot of stuffed animals to be in the audience and teach your child the art of telling stories aloud.

Do you ever wonder what to do with all those left over toilet paper rolls? Well, take two cardboard rolls, glue them together long ways, and you have binoculars! Let your child decorate them with either paint or markers. When it dries take your child with the binoculars on an indoor safari. Place stuffed animals or even pictures of animals all around the house in different rooms. Let your child go on a safari using his binoculars to discover these different animals. At the end of the trail you can read books together about animals.

Have an indoor snowball fight. This works especially well if you have more than one child, but it can still be fun with a parent and one child. First, figure out what you want to use for snowballs. You can blow up tons of white balloons or use crumpled up white paper. Then, construct forts out of couch cushions or chairs and blankets. Constructing this with your child can be a lot of fun in itself. When your forts are ready, begin the snowball fight!

Also, make dinner time an especially fun time. Take a large sheet of crate paper and tape it down to your table. Set the table as usual for dinner, but put out markers, crayons, stickers, glue and googley eyes, on the table. When dinner begins, and while you eat, let your children show their creativity on the crate paper. When they are done, cut out their works of art and display them. The crate paper can be used at any meal, anytime you just want to add a touch of fun to your meal. You can even make it a special Saturday morning breakfast tradition or do it every night for one week at dinner and such.

Have fun with these ideas and add your own touch to them. These ideas can have many variations and even spur your creativity bone. A good idea, if possible is to also prepare for indoor days in advance. When you’re at the store, stock up on your child’s favorite things like paint, construction paper, and other craft needs. That way, when an unexpected indoor day occurs, you and your child can make it an imaginative day!
