Cheerleading first started at Princeton University in the 1880s to encourage school spirit at football games. After then, Princeton graduate Thomas Peebles organized crowd chanting to the University of Minnesota in 1884. Then it was 1898 that University of Minnesota student Johnny Campbell stood in front of the crowd, and directed them in a chant, making Campbell the very first cheerleader.

Cheerleading is most closely associated with American football, and to a lesser degree basketball. Sports such as soccer, ice hockey, and wrestling, baseball rarely have cheerleaders. By the 1950s, most American high schools had formed cheerleading squads. By 1960s, cheerleading had grown to be a staple in American high school and collegiate sports. Organizing cheerleading competitions began to crop up with the first ranking of the “Top Ten College Cheerleading Squads” and “Cheerleader All America. In the 1960s National Football League (NFL) teams began to organize professional cheerleading teams. The 1980s saw the onset of modern cheerleading with more difficult stunts and gymnastics being incorporated into routines.

The 2000 major motion picture Bring It On was a movie based on cheerleading. Today, cheerleading has grown to an estimated 4 million participants in the United States alone. Other great traditions in the art of cheerleading have developed over the years.

The following are two major highlights cheerleading history:

1870’s: The first pep club was established at Princeton University.
1880’s: The first organized yell was recorded at Princeton University.

Cheerleaders increased their involvement in community service projects. And started receiving national media recognition. Cheerleading came a long way in ten decades. The importance of cheerleading was first acknowledged by Willis Bugbear in 1927, when he wrote:

“The cheerleader, where once was merely tolerated, is now a person of real estate. His prestige is such that at many schools and colleges he must win his place in competitive examination.”

The History and Tradition of the Glasgow Rangers

One of the most popular soccer teams in Scotland is the Glasgow Rangers. The Rangers are a team deep in history and tradition. In 1872, the Glasgow Rangers were formed by two brothers, Peter and Moses McNeil, and their friends William McBeath and Peter McNeail. They chose the name for their soccer club by combing through a book on English rugby and borrowing from an existing team’s name. The team saw limited action in their inaugural year with only a handful of friendly matches including a draw against Callander F.C. and an 11 to nil drubbing of Clyde.

Fast forward to more modern times and the Glasgow Rangers popularity has exploded. In 2006, Paul Le Geun took managerial control over the Rangers and went on a spree of signings for the team along with transactions that cleaned up some of the fat on the team. They struggled early on and, after a handful of defeats to lower level clubs, were removed from the League Cup. The Rangers cross-town rivals, the Glasgow Celtics, were dominate during this period which caused much agony for diehard Rangers fans.

Walter Smith was brought on in 2007 to replace Paul Le Guen. Smith brought on former Rangers player All McCoist to be his assistant manager.

The Glasgow Rangers have three primary colors: red, royal blue and white. Their home shirts are royal blue with white and red trim and the players wear white shorts with black socks. They occasionally will reverse parts of their uniform. For example, you can sometimes see the Glasgow Rangers playing in white socks and shorts that are royal blue in color.

The Rangers remain one of the most popular soccer clubs in all of Scotland, playing at any level, even though they split local attention and interest with the Glasgow Celtics. Thanks to the long history the Rangers have there are no signs of their popularity slowing down anytime soon.

The Basics of Golf Balls, Tees and Divot Repair Tools

For most serious golfers, their equipment is one of their most prized possessions. Golf clubs are obviously the most expensive pieces of equipment a golfer can buy. There are some cheaper accessories that are absolutely vital to your golf game whether you are playing professionally or just for recreation.

Unfortunately there are hundreds, if not thousands, of these golf accessories that are a complete waste of money. There are many gizmos and gadgets that are intended to lure in new and amateur golfers into buying them, with promises that the gadgets will help them “play like the pros.” The reality is that three of the biggest golf items aside from clubs are relatively simple. They are golf balls, golf tees and divot repair tools.

You obviously can’t play golf without some golf balls but there is a lot more to golf balls than just picking one up, placing it on a tee, and hitting it. There are hundreds of manufacturers and companies that sell many different types of golf balls. For new golf players, the many different types of golf balls and manufactures can be a bit overwhelming. The standard size for a golf ball is 1.62 inches in diameter and the maximum weight for a golf ball is 1.68 ounces.

All golf balls in the professional games must be approved by the USGA (United States Golf Association). Of course, if you are not going to be playing in any tournaments and/or professional games, then you will be able to use any type of golf ball you wish to play with. The rules for professional are very strict, though. They are so strict, that any player found using a ball that has not been approved by the USGA would be immediately disqualified.

Other than golf balls there are two other simple accessories that are absolutely necessary for your golf game: a bag of tees and a divot-repair tool. The tee is a wooden or plastic peg, which is placed in the ground to elevate your golf ball. The top of the tee is very slightly curved, so as to allow for a secure placement and hold, and of course, a clean swing. Tees are quite inexpensive, and can be bought in bags of twenty of thirty for just a couple of dollars. They come in varying heights as some golfers prefer their golf balls to be higher or sometimes lower for their drives.

The divot repair tool is a small device that allows you to repair dents that you create in the green. The green is a well-kept and maintained area that is sometimes marked by craters caused by landing golf balls. The divot repair tool allows you to fix the divot, or dent, by replacing the green back into its original location. Fixing divots is a common practice and is seen as a courtesy to your fellow golfers.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Part of the Appalachian Highlands, the Great Smokey Mountains National Park in Tennessee covers more than a half a million acres and its lush forests are home to thousands of species of wildlife.

The park includes several mountains which top 6,000 feet including Mount Le Conte which comes up just short of 6,600 feet and is the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi and a favorite with visitors to the park. However elevations throughout the park vary from a mere 900 feet to 6,600 feet which provides a mixture of both easy hiking trails and some quite difficult trails for the more experienced climbers. Indeed, the very hardy can enjoy a super hike along the Alum Cave trail up to the highest peak in the park at Clingman’s Dome. From this vantage point, which includes a 50 foot high observation tower, you can have a truly breathtaking and unobstructed view across thousands of acres of forest.

With a total of more than 850 miles of unpaved roads and trails the park provides some excellent hiking, including no fewer than 70 miles of hiking along the famous Appalachian Trail. One of my favorite trails takes you up to Chimney Tops where, atop these twin peaks, you get a fabulous view over the land below. Another firm favorite is the trail up to Laurel Falls which, with a drop of some 80 feet, is on a par with the falls to be found in Yosemite National Park.

But some great hiking is just one of the reasons for visiting this lovely national park and many visitors also enjoy cycling, especially in the area of Cades Cove, and also horseback riding from the park’s four rental stables. And do not forget the fishing either, with some wonderful rainbow and brook trout fishing along more than 700 miles of streams.

The park enjoys a fairly good annual rainfall varying from about 50 to 60 inches a year in the valleys and 80 to 90 inches a year on the peaks so that no matter where you travel in the park you will always find lush vegetation and, with it, a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. Indeed, there are reported to be over 200 species of bird to be seen in the park as well as dozens of mammals including black bears, white tailed deer and raccoons.

For those who like getting out for a hike all year around, hot or cold, wet or dry, then the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the perfect hiking venue with temperatures averaging in the mid 60s during the summer and dropping down to around 20 degrees in the winter.
