What Are Retro Prom Dresses?

Retro prom dresses is another term used to denote vintage prom dresses or dresses from an earlier time. In fact these dresses are so popular among the girls of the 21st century, that many high schools have themed proms of a particular era. The girls then have the task of finding dresses from that era, either through having them specially made or scoring thrift stores and online locations that sell vintage dresses. Since many of the modern styles are inspired by the designs of the past, you can shop for a brand new dress and still have the style you need to fit in with this retro theme.

Retro dresses for a prom are very popular because they are unique. You know that when you choose this type of dress there is very little chance that another girl at the prom will be wearing an identical dress. For the 2009 prom season, the major styles in retro dresses are those reminiscent of the dress styles of the 1950’s. The style of the neckline tends to be that of a halter dress style with the straps fitting up around the neck and with the back open. The skirt part of these dresses are bubbled or pleated and come just below the knee. This style allows you to show off your great legs.

With the wider skirt of this style and the fitted bodice, you don’t need to have the perfect figure to look stunning in a retro dress from the 50’s. If your hips are large, the flared skirt will hide them. To complete your attire, choose a hairstyle that was popular in that past era. Footwear that will complement the dress could be a strap style sandal with high heels.

Search through magazines showing what the stars wore in the 1950’s to find examples of dresses you could wear to your prom. There are many dress stores that sell previously owned items of this nature at really cheap

Some of the styles you can choose from if you want a prom dress from the 1950’s include:

- Ballerina style dress with frothy layers of lace that fall to the floor. This style of dress was usually strapless and fitted in tightly at the waist. From the waist it ballooned out over the hips.

- Rockabilly Dress. This was the traditional party dress in the 50’s. It features a scooped or square neckline, short sleeves and a full skirt that fell just below the knee. The bodice was gathered in at the waist and usually had a belt or a sash. Women often wore a crinoline under the full skirt so that it swayed out from the legs. These dresses were also available in strap designs. There were straps on the shoulders, but they were wider than what we call spaghetti straps.
