Accessories To Bring Along Your Cave Exploration

Hypothermia, falling, being struck by an object, and inadequate equipment are four of the major reasons behind caving exploration accidents. Most caving injuries could be prevented by wearing appropriate clothing, having the right training, observing good caving exploration habits and bringing the right accessories and equipment.

Hard hat

It is very important that you wear a good quality helmet when caving. Ensure that the hard hat has a chinstrap so it will remain in place and won’t fall off during falls or accidents. It is also advisable to have a light mounted on your helmet so that you don’t have anything to hold with your hands when you are in tight spaces.

Clothing

It could be very cold inside caves, so it is important that you bring something that will keep you warm, such as clothes made with synthetic fleece. Coveralls are also advisable because it can give you extra protection against the cold. Remember that hypothermia, a condition where the person’s temperature falls below what is normal, is one of the major accidents in cave explorations.

Lights

Although you will probably just need one source light for the entire trip, it is advisable to bring two additional light sources. Choose something that is stronger than a flashlight, but smaller. Also, it wise to bring extra batteries and bulbs.

Gloves

Gloves are also important not only to keep you warm, but also to protect your hands when you are roping. You don’t need to buy fancy gloves. Your trusty work gloves will do.

Footwear

The best footwear for cave exploration is a pair of strong waterproof boots.
