who have been to both would easily prefer the Uruguayan version of what a distinct beach town should be.

Geographically, Punta del Este is mostly located on fairly small piece of land surrounded on three sides by the Atlantic Ocean. As it typical with other beach towns, the peninsula is mostly covered with hotels, condos and all the accompanying businesses that support the tourism industry in this area. On the surrounding beaches and in the surrounding waters, ocean goers and yachts pack in tightly to enjoy the natural and man-made beauty found in Punta del Este.

There are a few main beaches that are popular in Punta del Este. Beaches on the windy side of the peninsula are ideal for water sports such as surfing, wind surfing and kite boarding. On the quiet side, beaches are more popular amongst tourists interested in people-watching, tanning and just hanging-out. Among the more famous beaches are La Playa de los Dedos (The Finger Beach), locate in Punta del Este and in the neighboring La Barra, Bikini beach is famous for playing host to the models and famous people who frequent this area.

While Punta del Este is fairly small and getting around foot is not difficult, renting a car can also be helpful, especially for day trips made to other local hotspots. There is very little public transportation on the peninsula and taxis are overpriced for the area. Another fairly unexpected practice still popular in Punta del Este is hitchhiking. Young people commonly hitchhike to get to the beach or to get home from a club. This form of transportation is still considered safe by locals.

The beautiful scenery and diverse international crowd make Punta del Este one of the most sought after beach resort cities in the world. Added to this, the local tourism industry has done a great job in catering to the needs of visitors to this area. Next time you’re in the area, take a few days to enjoy this, the South American version of Miami Beach.
